Escape from Diab is a serious videogame adventure in healthy eating
and exercise. The project is a production of Archimage, Inc in
collaboration with the Children’s Nutrition Research Center of
Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine on the project. Escape from Diab
is funded by a grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and
Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the National Institutes of Health.
Tentative release date for the videogame is 2008.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of three
children born after 2000 will develop diabetes. Childhood obesity
rates have tripled over the past 40 years, raising the risks of type
2 diabetes. According to the Surgeon General, "America's obesity
epidemic will dwarf the threat of terrorism if the nation does not
reduce the number of people who are severely overweight." Diabetes is
already the country’s leading cause of new blindness, kidney failure
and lower limb amputations. It is also the nation’s sixth leading
cause of death. Unlike type I diabetes, which is a result of mostly
genetic factors, type 2 diabetes is primarily associated with poor
diet and physical activity behavior. More than 95% of all diabetics
are type 2.
Escape from Diab puts players inside a sci-fi action and adventure
where healthy lifestyle choices are the keys to winning. Archimage
develops serious video games played on the Web, PCs, handhelds and
Nintendo’s Gamecube. The 23-year-old visual design studio has won
over 30 international awards for everything from architectural
building projects to broadcast television commercials, computer
imagery and print graphics. Clients include Time Warner
Communications, Knowledge Adventure, Ziff- Davis and IBM. The firm
has also worked on projects for The Walt Disney Company and Nintendo.
